Walking along holding a lions tale is a strange feeling. If you tap them on the haunches while walking along their tale naturally rises.
If you are then in the right position, i.e. either just to the side or at the rear, you can catch the tale and walk along holding it.
Lions do often speed up and this is then a good time to let go.
On one walk I was patting the rear quarter of a lion, as you would with a dog. I asked the keeper if they liked that and he advised that the lion would answer that question himself.
After four or five pats the lion turned and growled at me. Needless to say I stopped.
