This particlar lion had no interest whatsoever in being photographed and despite touching its' paws and encouraging it to play, it simply kept looking away from me.

My only course of action was to tap its' paws with my lens to make it look at me. After a few gentle taps, it became clear it was getting mildly fed up with me.

At this point I prepared myself for a claw swipe. As I was lying on the ground I did not have too much room for manouvre or time to react.

The swipe occurred. I moved instantly but still ended up with a scratch on the underside of my camera. I asked the keeper if all was OK as he was watching over me. He was looking elsewhere. So much for health and safety.
